“The attorney general’s office is responsible for public safety,” Christie said. “That’s both crime and corrections. We do such a bad job with our prisons that it affects our crime rates.”
Christie, who has represented inmates assaulted in state prisons as part of his pro bono work, said he would deploy attorneys in his office to help district attorneys prosecute individuals over violent acts in Alabama prisons. That, he said, would have a positive effect on the situation within the state’s penitentiaries.
